OAT MILK + HXNY: Diaspora Kaleidoscope

On view from November 14 through December 28, 2024
Brew House Arts - 711 S. 21st St. Pittsburgh, PA

Oat Milk + HXNY, co-curated by Tacumba Turner and Venice Pascual, is the eighth exhibit of The Future is Black Art Series.

A play on the idiom “Land of Milk and Honey”, the title Oat Milk + HXNY is an emerging idiom that highlights how aspects of BIPOC cultures are commodified, sanitized, and sold back to us as trendy or "hip" by mainstream culture. It reflects how cultural elements are often embraced, but only after being made more palatable for broader audiences. We aim to amplify the voices of local BIPOC artists, highlighting the common threads that bind us while also celebrating the differences in our diasporas.

The exhibition features 35 artists from three diasporic communities, representing 11 ethnicities, whose authentic and individual stories weave together to form a rich tapestry of the collective experience of being a BIPOC in America. Through genealogy, ancestry, and personal experiences, the pieces in this exhibit explore the themes of connectivity, spirituality, and the essence of remembering.

Opening reception on Thursday, November 14, from 5-8:30 pm, with remarks around 6 pm. See you there!
